Security video captures woman setting herself on fire while torching car, Etowah deputies say By Carol Robinson — The Birmingham News May 28, 2010, 11:25AM A Boaz woman trying to retaliate against the person who repossessed her car got burned in the process. Literally. Authorities say Haleigh Elizabeth Boland, 26, accidentally set herself on fire while she was torching the car of the person who had taken hers. To make matters worse, the entire incident was caught on tape. “It was just a big act of foolishness all the way around,” said Etowah County Sheriff’s spokeswoman Natalie Barton. The incident happened May 8 when authorities said Haleigh Boland and her father, Benny Gene Boland, 50, went to a home on Carlisle Cut-Off Road in the Mountainboro community and poured gasoline on a car. When investigators talked to the victim, they found the crime was recorded by a video surveillance system mounted on the home. The video shows a person deputies say is Haleigh Boland catching on fire and taking off her burning clothes as she runs to a getaway vehicle driven by her father. “It was a team effort,” Barton said. Father and daughter are charged with first-degree criminal mischief, which is a felony, authorities announced today. They have been released on $2500 bond each. Haleigh Boland suffered first- and second-degree burns on her upper body, Barton said. blog.al.com
