A zookeeper at Sydney’s Taronga Zoo has been seriously injured by an elephant which pinned her against a bollard. Full story: A young male elephant who shot to fame as ‘Mr Shuffles’ seriously injured zookeeper, Lucy Melo, at Sydney’s Taronga Zoo on Friday (October 19), by pinning her against a bollard. The incident had occurred around 11:30 am, when Melo was with the elephant during a routine training session in the enclosure, in which young elephants learn to wash themselves. Two other keepers helped move the elephant away and paramedics moved in, later taking Melo to the Royal North Shore Hospital, where she remains in critical but stable condition. [Andrew Wood, Acting Inspector, New South Wales Ambulance]: “Once she (Melo) went into cardiac arrest. They worked on her for about five minutes and then her heart… she started breathing again on her own. She has pretty major chest injuries at the moment.” The zoo is investigating the incident. [Cameron Kerr, Taronga Zoo Director]: “It is surprising and we’ll be reviewing the situation very carefully to understand what might have caused this.” Melo has reportedly worked with the two-and-a-half-year-old elephant, Pathi Harnwhich means “miracle” in Thaisince his miraculous birth at the zoo.
