DAVIE, Fla. — A Jeep Sahara that was being pursued by police crashed after getting a flat tire Wednesday morning, resulting in the driver’s death. Police said the incident began in a parking lot at Fort Lauderdale Executive Airport. A woman who worked at the airport pulled into the lot and was confronted by her estranged husband, who was distraught about recently being served with a restraining order for domestic violence, Fort Lauderdale police Sgt. Bill Schultz said. “He produced a firearm when he initially confronted her,” Davie police Lt. Bill Bamford said. “I don’t know if his intent was to shoot her, but he did strike her several times with the firearm.” The man then drove off, but police caught up with his Sahara in Davie. That’s when the man fired several shots at the police cruisers following him, Bamford said. Officers exchanged gunfire. The man in the Jeep was taken by ambulance to the hospital, where he later died. It wasn’t clear if the man had been shot. His name has not been released.
